Room acoustics

Room acoustics is the behaviour of sound in a room or a specifically defined area.

The behaviour of sound within a room is linked to the room size and shape together with the performance of the internal surfaces and the construction type. The mixture of “hard” surfaces that reflect sound and “soft” surfaces that absorb sound will create the room acoustics.

The challenge for the building designer is to create rooms with the appropriate acoustic balance for the purpose of the room. In a lecture theatre, it is important that music and speech can be heard and perceived as precisely and clearly as possible. In an open plan office, interrupting background noise should be controlled to ensure the appropriate level of privacy.
